Armed for Summer – Minus the Sweat

October 18, 2022

Summer is around the corner, but don’t sweat it. Excessive armpit perspiration – hyperhidrosis – affects over 3% of our population. However, unfortunately, the negative stigmas associated with persistent sweating prevent many Kiwis from seeking medical treatment.

When it comes to hyperhidrosis and armpits – or primary hyperhidrosis – faulty nerve signals trigger over reactive sweat glands. Although there is no hard and fast medical cause, this condition can run in families.

Fortunately, modern-day treatment for hyperhidrosis is non-invasive, requiring no nerve cutting – unlike sympathectomy surgery – and the procedure can be performed in a lunchtime, with no recovery downtime.

So, how does the treatment play out? Botox is injected into the skin of the armpit, blocking the nerve impulses that cause sweat glands to sweat – no incision, no local anaesthesia required. Results take full effect after two weeks and the armpits typically remain sweat-free for six-to-eight months.

A major concern for patients undergoing treatment for hyperhidrosis is that sweating will breakout in other body areas – such as the back, behind the knees and buttocks. However, this is rare following Botox treatment.
